The winners of the WOTRO Science for global development Battle of Ideas
WOTRO Science for global development was organizing this interesting battle for international students in honor of their 50th anniversary! The students picked a theme (Food, Water, Security and Rule of Law, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, Inclusive development) and started cracking in search for innovative ideas to make this world a better place. An important challenge was that besides coming up with a good idea, the students had to invest in the social innovative part. In short, come up with different methods of working and implementation of their ideas.
Hems Zwier of the Social Innovation Lab teamed up with WOTRO to create the most exciting and challenging sandpit ever. Experts from all over the world joined in and worked with the students in the final sandpit on the 15th of October. The Battle of Ideas is not only a challenge but also a co-creation event. The students challenged each other with the objective to even make their opponent better by reflecting on their ideas. Call it a Competitive Cooperative Challenge! Besides Hems, Anook and Maria joined in to facilitate the teams.

Een internationaal publiek bezocht deze week de Dutch Design Week. Van trendsetter tot trendwatcher … ze waren allen aanwezig! Van graduele ontwikkelingen tot spectaculaire innovaties. Als er een conclusie te trekken valt, dan is het wel dat het wel goed zit met dat Dutch Design.
Mooi om te zien dat ook Social Design manifest de Dutch Design Week binnentrekt. Concepten die de kwaliteit van ons leven … nu en in de toekomst gaan bepalen.

Maar welke lifestyle trends zien die lifestyle studenten nu eigenlijk in 2014? Andrea geeft in dit -one shot interview- een doorkijkje!
Hoe wordt het sportpark de Venen en Maten hèt kloppend hart van Kampen? Topstudenten van Windesheim gingen in het weekend van 3 tot en met 5 oktober met deze vraag aan de slag. Zij ontwikkelde een plan om de maatschappelijke rol van het sportpark te verstevigen en onderzochten hoe samenwerking tussen verschillende generaties tot een echt bruisend park kan leiden.
Zondagmiddag 5 oktober stonden zij in een Dragons Denop het sportpark en gaven hun visie en creatieve oplossingen voor het sportpark van de toekomst. De dragons waren bestuurders, experts en ondernemers uit Kampen. Zij legden de studenten het kritische vuur aan de schenen over de gepresenteerde ideeën.
De uitdaging was om een visie te ontwikkelen die het sportpark tot ‘vitaal hart’ maakt! Geen eenvoudige opgave, aangezien de omliggende wijken heel divers van aard zijn. Kom dan maar eens met een visie die de bewoners (alle generaties) uit de omliggende wijken activeert tot het nemen van een actieve rol bij het sportpark. Als sporter, bezoeker en/of vrijwilliger.
Om echt de sfeer te proeven verbleven de studenten het hele weekend op het sportpark en trokken zij de wijken in om met de bewoners in gesprek te gaan. De studenten gingen op zoek naar mogelijkheden om de verschillende generaties te verbinden en verkende de samenwerking met instellingen op het gebied van zorg, welzijn en onderwijs. Dit alles om van het sportpark een maatschappelijk betrokken plek te maken waar verenigingen, bewoners en de gemeente trots op kunnen zijn! Zondagmiddag werden de oplossingen gepresenteerd in een Dragons Den.
Een initiatief park voor iedereen
Het winnende team wil van het sportpark een initiatiefpark maken, waarbij alle generaties en allerlei doelgroepen actief betrokken worden. In dit park staat niet langer alleen de sport centraal. De competitie tussen sportverenigingen wordt overstegen door de bewoners te verbinden op voor hen belangrijke en zelfbedachte activiteiten. Een andere groep studenten wilde de generaties met elkaar verbinden door om de drie maand een kwartaalwedstrijd te organiseren tussen de verschillende Kampense wijken. Het derde team gaf het kloppend hart vorm door het idee van een multi-sport abonnement, waardoor kennis gemaakt kon worden met een veelheid van sport in combinatie met een ‘social bistro’ voor iedereen, een ontmoetingsplek gericht op de samenkomst van alle generaties.
Rob Kluvers, sportparkmanager en opdrachtgever, vatte het weekend mooi samen: ‘een veelheid aan ideeën, die ik meeneem bij het krachtig neerzetten van de toekomst van het park. Een bruisend en vitaal park als kloppend hart van Kampen’.

Matchmaking event
In June WOTRO organized a matchmaking event for the students that registered for the Battle. In Utrecht they met-up, got acquainted and got a good look at their opponents or better their co-creators. Watch the video for a short impression.
Next november the World Forum for Democracy will open it’s doors to investigate if youth can revitalise democracy. Over 150 countries and probably over 1500 participants will gather to discuss best practices and take them a big step further.
The Social Innovation Lab will be there, reporting on labs, breaking news, thoughts and new roadmaps for the future of democracy.
We will team up again with the World Forum for Democracy, the on-line magazine Society30.com and students of the Windesheim Honours College to report on the World Forum and bring you some stunning stories, day to day social media coverage and in-depth interviews.
